Mayor's Second Sustainability Fair sponsored by City of Crossville scheduled to take place April 29th
Event part of City of Crossville's energy-efficiency initiative
In a follow-up to last year's ultra-successful event, the City of Crossville will host its second annual Sustainability Fair for Cumberland County students on Thursday, April 29.
The event, aimed at educating 5th-graders on the development of sustainable, "green" energy sources, will be held at the Cumberland County Community Complex from 9:00 am until 1:00 for students, 1 to 5 p.m. the Fair is open to the public, admission is free.
The fair is just part of the City of Crossville's overall initiative to developing green energy sources and becoming one of the most energy-efficient cities in the state, said Mayor J.H. Graham III. "Our nation has enjoyed over a century of relatively inexpensive energy," Graham said, "with what seemed to be an inexhaustible supply of oil reserves and a relatively forgiving environment. We have seen, though, that we can't rely on past practices to meet our energy needs. We will have to be proactive and lead the way in crafting a sensible, sustainable, clean-energy future."
The results and response from last year's inaugural event was very positive, and this year's event will be even better, Graham said. "Last year's Sustainability Fair was a success in so many different ways," he said, "and we expect April's Fair to be even bigger and better." Sustainability is defined as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," and that's the city's goal with this initiative, Graham said.
The fair features exhibits and demonstrations on the latest "green" technologies, designed to make households and businesses more energy efficient, produce a smaller carbon footprint and save money. Among the topics that will be featured at the fair are:
- Home - geothermal energy, photovoltaic solar energy, energy star appliances, efficient wood stoves, rain barrel technology, water efficiency, recycling, daylighting, LED lighting and energy efficient buildings.
- Environment - wind turbines, carbon footprints, composting, ozone natural areas, benefits of trees, tree products, wildlife, water conservation, erosion and sediment control.
- Transportation - biodiesel, bicycles, UCarts, hybrid vehicles, and scooters.
Vendors at the fair, along with the city, will help professionals and homeowners learn about the cost-effectiveness of green technology and how it can help the environment. Some of the vendors for the Sustainability Fair include: Volunteer Energy Cooperative, Middle Tenn. Natural Gas, Home Builder Association, Lightwave Solar Electric, Roane State Community College, Biodiesel Logic, Inc., Master Gardeners, Farmers Market, UT Extension, TWRA, Tennessee Forestry Division, Crossville Tree Board, UT Experiment Station, and Veolia Wastewater Services.
